National Security vs Civil Liberties

Resolved: Democracies ought to prioritize the protection of civil liberties over national security

Affirmative Side

Without civil liberties, elections are fundamentally nonfunctional. no one would call North Korea a democracy, though they have elections. This is because it doesn't have civil liberties.

Negative Side

Democracies die without security. Democracy cannot function without security, during Covid-19 the right of assembly was suspended, but was restored after democracies became safe.

What is National Security?

Affirmative Side: (Against National Security)

Anything that was said to contribute to safety of a nation, even if it was used for political dissent, racial prejudice, or war hysteria.

Negative Side: (For National Security)

Only proportionate measures done to secure a nation as a whole, not prejudice, not dissent, but real measures that achieved the nation’s safety.
